The University of Lisbon offers a great variety of programmes, which cover all scientific areas of its faculties: Arts, Sciences, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Psychology and Education, Dental Medicine and Fine Arts.
The University of Lisbon has more than 20000 students and a teaching staff of approximately 1600.
The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) is organised in 9 Departments which conduct teaching and research in different fields: Chemistry and Biochemistry; Education; Geology; Informatics; Mathematics; Physics; Plant Biology; Statistics and Operations Research; Zoology and Anthropology.
With more than two hundred on-going projects, research activities at the Faculty of Sciences are carried out in 26 Laboratories and Research Centres or Institutes embracing a variety of domains in Science and Technology. Many of these R&D activities are developed together with international teams and are funded both at national and european levels.
The Department for Statistics and Operations Research (DEIO), with a staff of 60, offers both undergraduate and graduate programs and carries out research activities in several topics. Main topics developed in the OPERATIONS RESEARCH area are: Combinatorial Optimization (models and applications - Location, Production and Distribution, Scheduling, Telecommunications), Mixed Integer Programming, Non-Linear Programming, Meta heuristics, Neural Networks, Stochastic Optimization, Systems for Diagnostic and Demand Forescating, Decision Support.
